About Joe's Coral Reef
I'm Joe. I've been keeping reef tanks since 2003.
What started as one saltwater tank in 2003 has grown into more than 1,000 gallons of interconnected reef systems running out of my home in Southeast Michigan — a 300-gallon display, two connected 150s, plus dedicated frag and quarantine tanks. Some of the corals in my system have been with me since 2006. So has Ruby, my maroon clownfish from that same era.
I'm an engineer by training, and that shapes how I approach the hobby. I care about why something works, not just that it does. Reef systems are complicated, and a lot of the advice floating around the hobby is half-truth, marketing, or outdated. I'd rather understand the underlying biology and chemistry, then build systems that work for the long haul.
Twenty-plus years in, the thing I've learned most is how much we still don't know. Reef-keeping is one of the few hobbies where genuine experts will tell you they're still figuring it out. That's part of what makes it interesting.
What I sell:
Aquacultured corals from my own systems. Long-held mother colonies, fragged and healed before they're listed. Nothing wild-collected, nothing flipped from wholesalers. When you buy from me, you're getting a piece of a colony that's been thriving in a stable system for years — sometimes a decade or more.
What I share:
Practical reefing knowledge from someone who's made most of the mistakes already. No mystical method, no proprietary additive, no "secret to success." Just observation, patience, and the willingness to keep learning.
If you're local to Southeast Michigan, pickup is easy. If you're farther out, I ship overnight with full DOA coverage. Either way, ask questions. I'd rather have a real conversation about your system than just sell you a frag.
